History
The first ironworks in Oxelösund was built between 1914 and 1917, and was the first in Sweden to base its iron production on coke. The coke was produced from coal in the company’s own coking mill.

During the period between 1957 and 1961, the mill was expanded into an integrated ironworks, steelworks and rolling mill, with heavy plate as the main product. Expansion then continued in several stages, and the world’s most powerful plate rolling mill was made operational in 1998.

SSAB Swedish Steel Group was founded in 1978. The Swedish State had a 50% holding in the company, while the Stora and Gränges companies each acquired a 25% share. The Group also included the ironworks in Domnarvet, and the Luleå steel operations. In order to ensure that the companies that were previously competitors would cooperate, they were organized into divisions that were given different responsibilities. Oxelösund was given the task of producing heavy plate, while Domnarvet was to specialize in strip, sheet, wire and rails. Luleå was given the task of producing beam products and universal steels.

The Group was reorganized in 1988, which led to the founding of the Parent Company and subsidiaries. Oxelösund then became a subsidiary, trading under the name of SSAB Oxelösund AB. A year later, in 1989, the Group was launched on the Stockholm Stock Exchange.

SSAB Oxelösund continues to develop, refine and renew its production system. Extensive research is also pursued into the development of new products. WELDOX, HARDOX and, the latest addition, TOOLOX, represent a unique mix of SSAB Oxelösund products that are world leaders in their respective fields.
